Is a Guinea Pig the Right Pet for You?

When it comes to choosing a pet, you have TONS of choices. You could go with the popular ones – like a dog or cat. You could go for the unique, like an iguana or a snake. Or maybe you’re thinking about a guinea pig.

If a guinea pig is on your list of possibilities, here are a few questions to ask yourself to ensure that it’s the right pet for you.

What kind of care does a guinea pig need?

Guinea pigs require regular grooming, and they need their cages cleaned at least once per week. Additionally, they need time out of their cage each day – and you’re probably going to want to keep an eye on them - so they don’t play hide and seek with you. And, of course, they’ll need to be fed every day, too.

Do you have the time to take care of a guinea pig?

All of this care takes time. Cleaning their cage takes time. Giving them time out of their cage take time, as does feeding and grooming. You’ll want to make sure you have enough time in your schedule to be able to do these things.

What are the costs associated with having a guinea pig?

So, you’re going to need to buy a few things for your guinea pig. You’re going to need:

  • Large cage (a small or medium Clearly Loved Lucidium Pen is a definite possibility!)
  • Bedding material – paper is recommended
  • A small box – because guinea pigs like to go and hide
  • Food dish and water bottle
  • Guinea pig pellets
  • Hay
  • Toys – for enrichment
  • Veterinarian visits
  • Medications as needed

Are you ready to adopt more than one guinea pig?

Guinea pigs are social creatures – which means they’ll do much better if they’re living with a friend. So, you definitely need to consider having at least two.

Do you have children who are mature enough to help?

If your children are the ones asking for a guinea pig, make sure they’re mature enough to handle the responsibilities – and that they have the time.

Do you have other pets?

If you have other pets, you’ll want to consider how they’ll react to a new member of the family. Some cats and dogs are not the biggest fans of these little furballs.

With an average lifespan of 5-7 years, guinea pigs can make for an excellent pet, but be sure to take into consideration their needs and your lifestyle before making a final decision.
